Our Midtown Ministries Team2009 Mission Trip to Pennsylvania sees 9 children saved!

Midtown Ministries might be a small congregation, but our hearts are on fire for God. On July 11th - 18th, nine of our folks went on mission to the mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania. Four of the children who went and one of the adults have been Christians for less than a year, so this was an exceptional opportunity for them to grow in their faith. A few of them had never been outside of South Carolina before, but all of us were amazed at the beauty of the mountains that God has created.

Our hotel was in Indiana, PA and our first assignment was twenty miles east in Seward, PA where we held a Backyard Bible Club at the Volunteer Fire Department for about thirty kids in the mornings on Monday thru Friday. Seward Baptist is a very small church with only about 15 members in Sunday worship. Our purpose was to win souls for Christ and to help build the church's membership. Woodhaven Baptist of Rock Hill also held a VBS at the church in the evening. Between the two of us, Seward Baptist had a good boost toward some new growth.

Our BYBC had four stations. The Bible lesson, crafts, games and snacks. Each of our four children were given permission to take one of the other kids aside anytime during the activities and share the gospel using the colors on bracelets that we gave them. Each kid who heard the gospel was given a bracelet and a card explaining it. If any child exhibited an interest in receiving Christ, our kids were instructed to bring him or her to Pastor Dave.

God worked miracles on this trip. We had nine professions of faith and many more who heard the gospel presentation given on a one on one basis. The most encouraging thing is that the kids from Seward began sharing the gospel with the bracelets we gave them. On the last Teaching the lesson (Click to enlarge)day, a young boy, who had not been there before, came to Pastor Dave and asked for him to share the gospel from the bracelet. He said he had heard it from two other boys in town but did not remember what all the colors meant. After hearing the presentation, he wanted to accept Christ as his Savior. This boy's parents never took him to church, but he had been going to any church to which he could catch a ride.

In the afternoons, we were supposed to do a BYBC in New Florence, PA, which is about 4 miles from Seward, but we only had three kids show up. So, we merged it with the Seward group and went to Johnstown to do some prayer walking. We worked in two Section 8 apartment communities and were able to get the names and addresses of several people who were interested in helping Pastor Fish of Seward Baptist begin a new work in their community. We are planning a BYBC in one of those communities next year.

On the way home, everyone was exhausted but looking forward to the next mission. Meanwhile, we will stay on mission at home.

Sha-Sha the Clown Wins 2!

Nothing can beat the innocence and sincerity of a child's heart. This mission experience was designed to have children witnessing to children before they heard the gospel from an adult. The picture at the left is 8 year old Asharia Barnette acting as Sha-Sha the Clown.

Asharia witnessed to many of the children, bringing two of them who accepted Christ as their Savior  to Pastor Dave for his counsel and assurance that they were sincere.

Sha-Sha was pastor Dave's champion evangelist on this trip. Congratulations, Asharia!

Next Stop... Islam

Daniel Romanoski and Melanie Pope have been invited to join a York Baptist Association mission team going for nine days in October into an Islamic nation in Asia. (The exact destination is being kept secret for their safety.)

Daniel is relatively new to Midtown Ministries and Melanie has been serving with us for over a year. They have a blessed and succesful ministry with our youth.

It is so rewarding to see our young people growing into leaders and missionaries willing to take the gospel to all the world.

If God inspires you to help these two recent Winthrop graduates go on mission, please make your check out to Midtown Ministries and send it to:

A New Friend & Helper

Attack of the Chipmunks

Local helper, Ruth WolfeMany people befriended us while we were in Pennsylvania, but the lady in this picture loved us and we loved her back. Ruth Wolfe, in spite of her recent hip replacement and bout with breast cancer, was there to help us every morning. If we needed anything, she saw that we got it.

Ruth loves the Lord Jesus Christ and lives every moment for him. Thank you, Ruth, for being such a wonderful host and good friend! We pray God will let us meet again next year.

There always has to be at least one funny story from every trip. Lillie Crawford, seen here eating pizza in the hotel lobbyLillie Crawford (Click to enlarge), had to withstand a lot of teasing this week.

On Monday morning, Lillie was the first one outside to load up the cars. When the rest of us arrived, she was standing there with this dazed look on her face. She said,
"Those chipmunks attacked me! They came out from under your car, Pastor Dave, and ran up my arm." For the rest of the week, she had to hear jokes about headlines saying, "Mission Team Slaughtered in Vicious Chipmunk Attack." Of course, the children sat behind her in the car all week singing like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
